Missionary Ridge Camp #63
Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War
Department of Tennessee (including Alabama)

April 11, 2015 Meeting
This past Saturday's memorial service at Kirklin Cemetery in the Oak Hills Community of Alton Park went great. Kirklin Cemetery had long been forgotten until former City Commissioner William Cotton spearheaded a cleanup campaign. Mother Nature blessed us with perfect weather. Both the SUVCW Missionary Ridge 63 Camp and the NSDU Andrew Jackson Penny Chapter were well represented. The above photo includes Harvey Scarborough (SUVCW), Taylor Watson ( Lookout Mtn. City Council), Elliott Worland (SCV), Mark Miller, Jeff Webb (CC), Mark Kemp (PCC), and Chip Brown (SUVCW), Joanne Favors (Chattanooga City Council), Patricia Rhodes, Tim Hill and Alma Webb (Regent). Courtesy of Jeff and Alma Webb, the following gives additional information about some of the family buried here: There were two Elisha Kirklins. Elisha the son was a Union Soldier and had a headstone at one time but, it may still be covered by a tree. His dates are B 3-10-1832 D 12-31-1890. The other Union Soldier was William H Kirklin B 10-12-1840 D 7-15-1869. I will check but, I think there were two Allen J. Kirklin's of which one was a Union Soldier. As for the spelling, that one is hard. In Elisha Kirklin's (the father) hand written will he spells his name Kirklin but, later in the will it is spelled Kirklen. Death certificates show both spellings also. So, I assume the oldest known spelling would be correct. It's funny because Kirklin's town was known as Kirklin Town but, some say it was Kirkland Town.

Following the ceremony, the Camp decided to meet next on Memorial Day, May 25, 2015. Check the Meetings page for more information.
