We will have our Christmas party at Wally's restaurant in
East Ridge, Tn on December 15th at 3:15 pm et.
We had originally reserved this for 1:00 pm et on that date,
but we were pushed back to 3:15 pm by the restaurant
management when 100 truckers requested this same time.
So with discretion being over valor against these odds, we
will meet at 3:15 pm et.
Hope to see all the Camp there.
Merry Christmas to all!

I would like to personally thank each one who participated
in the Sgt. Samual Poteet Headstone/Memorial ceremony
this past Saturday. It was a long way to travel to the Sparta,
Tn. area for all of us coming from Alabama, Georgia and
Tennessee. We had 8 to do the duty of about 13 soldiers and
I am proud of how everyone did their part and more.
It started raining on the way there and was raining as we got
there and we thought that we may have to do most of the
ceremony in the covered shed, but just as we got our gear
and flags ready, the rain slacked down to a drizzle and we
were able to perform the ceremony at Sgt. Poteet's head
stone.
The ceremony went well and the Freeman family was appreciative
of what we had done for them and they asked many
questions about the SUV and about what other things we
did. They were very interested in our muskets and associated
gear. One relative wanted this same kind of ceremony
for an ancestor in Kentucky and we gave him the information
on how to contact the SUV there.
Mitzi Freeman took many pictures with a digital camera and
she says she will forward them to us. As soon as it receive
them, I will forward them to the Camp.
Merry Christmas to all in the Camp.

Our Camp has been asked to perform a Headstone/Memorial Dedication for
Sergeant Samual Poteet of the Union Army.
Time: December 8th, 2007-Sometime after 11:00 et, 10:00 ct
Place: Saylor's Cemetery- Close to Sparta, Tn.
We will be using the Headstone/Memorial Dedication from the SUV website
which is :
http://suvcw.org/ftp.htm
It takes about 13 soldiers to do this. At present, we only have 7 volunteers
and will have to double up on some parts, so if you know the 9 count of
firing for the Honor guard, we can use you. Or if you only have a uniform,
there are several reading parts we can have you do.
Rallying point for trip from the Chattanooga area: Since we have several
members from Alabama, Tennessee and Georgia, we will rally at the
Wal Mart parking lot in Soddy-Daisy, Tn. at 930a et. Take corridor J-Hiway
27 north out of Chattanooga. Exit at Harrison Lane. Then left and left again
to the parking lot. Once everyone is there, we'll proceed to the Sparta area.
Take Hiway 111 North to the Sparta area . We will first go to the Hampton's
Crossroads Church to meet with the Freeman Family around 1100 et.
(1) After getting in the Sparta area.
(2) Take the "Old Kentucky Road" exit. (It will also say "Hampton's Crossroads".)
(3) Turn left at the stop sign and cross over 111.
(4) Hampton's Crossroads Church is right next to 111.
To go to Saylor's Cemetery:
(5) Stay on "Old Kentucky Road".
(6) "Old Kentucky Road" makes a sharp curve to the left. Follow the curve.
(7) You will go down several miles and then come to a 4-way stop.
This is the intersection of "Old Kentucky Road" and Bunker Hill Road.
(8) Turn right. The cemery is on the left.
We will have discussions before the ceremony so that everyone will know theirs parts.
If there are any questions, let me know.

We need to thank Harvey for all he does for the Camp.

Hi Jim,
I thought the dedication yesterday was a very good one. I was glad that
the Camp participated in the dedication. Very fitting indeed.
I'm trying to put together a webpage of the event. It is shown below for
now, but only by clicking on this link. I wasn't sure if it was Wes Davis
that read the passage in front of the troops prior to the salute to the
Union markers. Perhaps you can confirm this for me. Also, do you know if
he read the same poem that Charlie Engle quoted in the April issue of
Grapeshot? It is titled "The Blue and the Gray" by Francis Miles Finch.
I'm thinking of including it on this page as well.
UnionGraveMarkersDedication.htm
Hope everyone shows for the ceremony at the Georgia Monument next Sunday.
I'll try to photo it as well.

Hi Harvey,
You can consider yourself asigned to this project. If some of the
others come up with some of the pictures, that will be fine. I'm
sure they won't mind if they get different views of the same thing.
I'm like you, I don't remember any monuments in the Mcfarland Gap
area, but I don't go there very much. If they are there we can maybe
find out where they are from some of the members or from the Park
rangers.
So go ahead and do what you can. You can get Pahl's e-mail from the
forwarded message I sent if you want and answer him when you get
some pictures. Let the camp know what you have been able to do for
the project when you get time.
Thanks for volunteering for this and the many other things you do for
us.
Commander Fletcher
Hi Commander Fletcher,
If you would like, since I have a digital camera, I am able to get those
photos of the Michigan monuments. I'm very close by Orchard Knob and could
get those on my lunch hour. I pass by Reed's Bridge almost daily and I
know where the four small markers are to Minty's Cavalry. And, I can make
a quick trip to Chickamauga Battlefield to get the Snodgrass Hill & Lytle
Hill monuments.
The only one I'm not so sure about is the McFarland Gap monument. I just
don't recall any Civil War monuments or markers being anywhere around the
area of the ridge that Georgia 2 and McFarland Gap Road both go through.
Perhaps someone in the Camp knows and would pass along directions. Or,
most likely the National Park Service would know and I could check with
them.
Unless one of the regular members would like to do this project, I am
available. Just let me know if you want to assign the job to me. I believe
I could get this done on or before April 3rd (I'll be out of town Easter
weekend).

Brother Commander James:
I am engaged in a project for the Department of Michigan and hope that
someone in your Camp can be of some assistance.
My committee is compiling a photo survey of the current condition all
Michigan Civil War monuments outside of the State of Michigan. I believe
I have located all of them and photographed them all, except for a few at
Chickamauga and Chattanooga. I have visited the battlefield twice in an
attempt to get them, but just have not been able to. I do have
photographs of them all when they were dedicated, so I am aware of the
ones I am missing and have a general idea where they are located.
Is it possible if I provide a list of the ones I am missing, that someone
in the Camp can spend a few hours and round up the missing ones for me?
Hoping the answer is yes - I am attaching the list:
9th Michigan Infantry - at the base of the ridge at McFarland's Gap
10th Michigan Infantry - near the base of Orchard Knob
21st Michigan Infantry - Lytle Hill (I have the one near the Widow Glenn's house)
22nd Michigan Infantry - Snodgrass Hill
1st Michigan Engineers - Orchard Knob
4th Michigan Cavalry - Reed's Bridge
Thanks for any help you can provide.
